This thing, the CDJ2000, the standard player for DJing in most clubs, is everywhere. What is its message to us? It is said to come from outer space. But is that really true?
In a half-hour lecture, cultural scholar and performer Anna Froelicher aka TS Jessica Marnie turns her attention to the CDJ device. Marnie analyses the impact of design as a felt relationship between humans and objects and asks how binary categories such as man/woman and human/monster are constructed and perpetuated in connection with a DJ tool. The lecture performance uses text, video and performative elements to deconstruct the binary narratives of the devices and, not least, to counter them with a touch of humour.
«Dawn Of A New Species» was published in modified text form in zweikommasieben Magazine and is part of a four-part column called «Track Down Fiction».
